VIDEO: Overcoming impediments to a culture of innovation in government

At AGL Summit on May 23 in Sacramento, government practitioners gathered to discuss the future of digital services in the state of California and beyond. Lightning talks and panels focused on topics like agile project management, modern procurement, and user centered design.

To show how these best practices could be more widely adopted in government, the last panel discussion of the day focused on how to overcome impediments to a culture of innovation and smart risk-taking. Participants included:

  • Ben Hafer, formerly CTO at Child Welfare Digital Services project
  • John O’Duinn, formerly at U.S. Digital Service and Code for America
  • Rob Klopp, formerly CIO of Social Security Administration
  • Krista Canellakis, Chief Innovation Officer at City and County of San Francisco

Drawing on their combined experience with innovation efforts in federal, local, and nonprofit civic organizations, the panelists discussed key elements for leading change in the risk-averse public sector.
